European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has announced a new visa policy that will make it easier for Indonesian citizens to enter the European Union. The policy allows Indonesians who are on their second visit to the EU to be eligible for a multi-entry Schengen visa. This new visa policy was revealed during a joint press conference with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto at the Berlaymont Building in Brussels. Von der Leyen stated that the visa policy aims to strengthen long-term ties between Indonesia and the EU, particularly in areas such as education, investment, and social exchange. This initiative is part of the people-to-people connections pillar of the EU–Indonesia strategic partnership, focusing on building bridges and fostering cooperation between the two regions.
President Prabowo expressed his appreciation for the deepening of EU–Indonesia ties and emphasized the importance of trust and shared values in building long-term relationships. He sees Europe as a key player in maintaining global stability and envisions a stronger partnership with the EU that goes beyond trade and economics. Prabowo also expressed hope for the finalization and signing of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) in Brussels, highlighting the benefits of closer collaboration between Indonesia and the EU.
With the implementation of this new visa policy and the enhancement of economic partnership, Indonesia and the European Union are embarking on a new chapter in their bilateral relations. This chapter is characterized by increased openness, strategic cooperation, and mutual benefits for citizens of both regions. The EU’s decision to ease visa requirements for Indonesian citizens marks a significant step towards strengthening ties and fostering closer engagement between Indonesia and Europe.
