President Joko Widodo’s successor and current President of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, delivered a strong critique of neoliberal economic theory during his speech at the 27th anniversary of the National Awakening Party (PKB) on Wednesday. He challenged the belief that concentrating wealth at the top will eventually benefit the wider population, dismissing it as a myth that has never come to fruition. Prabowo emphasized the importance of Article 33 of the Constitution, which he believes lays the groundwork for a secure and prosperous state. He highlighted the need for a state that ensures the well-being of its people, addressing issues such as poverty, hunger, and economic stability.
Prabowo acknowledged the value of democratic ideals but stressed that they are meaningless if citizens continue to face basic hardships. He cited Article 33 of the Constitution as embodying the true economic spirit of Indonesia, advocating for an economy based on mutual cooperation and familial solidarity rather than corporate dominance. Prabowo rejected the principles of neoliberalism, which justifies inequality by claiming that wealth will eventually trickle down to all members of society.
He argued that this trickle-down effect is unrealistic and has not materialized despite centuries of waiting. Prabowo’s vision for a people-centered economy aligns with his commitment to inclusive economic policies that serve all citizens, not just the elite. By rejecting models that perpetuate inequality, he reaffirmed his dedication to building a more equitable and prosperous future for Indonesia.
