President Prabowo’s Merah Putih Village Coops: Ending Middlemen & Loan Sharks

President Prabowo Subianto stresses the significance of the 800,081 Merah Putih Village Cooperatives launch in enhancing people’s economic independence and eradicating exploitative practices by middlemen and loan sharks that have long disadvantaged farmers in rural areas. In his address at the official inauguration of the program in Bentangan Village, Klaten Regency, Central Java, he recalled observing these issues during his tenure as Chairman of the Indonesian Farmers Harmony Association (HKTI) in 2004. The ongoing challenges faced by farmers, including post-harvest losses due to lack of transportation and storage facilities, remained a focal point in his speech. Additionally, he highlighted the bureaucratic hurdles hindering the distribution of subsidized fertilizer to farmers and the pervasive exploitation by middlemen who manipulate prices. President Prabowo emphasized the need for Merah Putih Village Cooperatives as a transformative solution to break the cycle of exploitation and empower farmers. He called for bold action to address these longstanding issues and pave the way for a more equitable agricultural landscape.
